Start with the basics: Invest in Versatile Wardrobe Staples
Think of these pieces as the ‘backbone’ of your wardrobe. Items like a great pair of jeans or a classic trenchcoat will anchor all your outfits, and you can easily style them in endless ways. For example, a simple black dress can be dressed up with heels for an event, or paired back with sneakers or slides for a casual daytime look.
The best part? Basics don’t have to be boring! Even a plain white tee can look chic with the right accessories. And trust me, you’ll wear these pieces all the time.
Shop Smart with Secondhand and Vintage Finds
Op Shopping Tips
- Go with an Open Mind: Op shopping is like a treasure hunt – you never know what you’ll find! I have a few gorgeous op shop finds in my wardrobe which I still wear often.
- Look for Quality Fabrics: Check for fabrics like wool, cotton, and denim that stand the test of time. Sometimes, vintage pieces are actually better quality than new ones!
- Try Different Sections: Don’t just stick to the women’s section – often, you’ll find hidden gems in men’s jackets or sweaters. A tailored men’s blazer can look great teamed with a pair of jeans and a tee!
I love secondhand shopping because each piece has a story. Plus, you’ll often find unique, one-of-a-kind items that nobody else has!
Master the Art of Mixing High and Low Fashion
- Elevate with Accessories: Pair a thrifted dress with a pair of quality shoes and bag… it’s a simple but effective way to create an expensive looking outfit without breaking the budget.
- Simple Outfit, Bold Piece: Wear basics like jeans and a white tee, but add a high-quality, bold accessory, like a great pair of sunglasses or a statement necklace, to bring the whole look together.
I often mix high and low budget items together. One of my go-to high/low looks is teaming a good quality blazer with a pair of jeans and simple tee or tank, along with statement earrings and a bag to give my outifit a more elevated, polished look.
Prioritize Accessories to Transform Your Look
Accessories for Every Budget:
- Look for Vintage Accessories: Vintage stores and markets are often treasure troves for unique, affordable accessories like scarves, belts, and bags. They add so much character to an outfit without it costing a lot.
- Layering Jewellery: Mix affordable jewellery pieces, like stacking rings or layered necklaces, for a put-together look. Layering instantly adds a touch of sophistication.
- Statement Earrings: Sometimes all you need is a pair of statement earrings. They’re small but mighty, adding polish to your look, whether you’re in a casual tee or a little black dress.
I love to refresh a basic outfit with accessories, it’s such an easy way to add personality! Another little trick is to tie a little silk scarf onto a bag handle, just for an extra pop of colour.
Know When to Spend and When to Save
- Save on Trends, Spend on Timeless: Trends are fun, but they don’t usually stick around. You can pick up a trend item at a lower price, but save your budget for quality, timeless pieces that you’ll keep reaching for.
- Investment Examples: Pieces worth investing in could be a great-fitting pair of jeans or a black blazer that can be dressed up or down.
One item I usually prefer to spend a little more and invest in is a good quality winter coat. It’s one of those items that you know will last you for years to come, especially if it’s a good quality wool one. It also instantly adds polish to your winter outfits!
Embrace Minimalism to Create a Stylish Capsule Wardrobe
Steps for Building a Capsule Wardrobe:
- Pick a Few Signature Colours: Choose a colour palette with a couple of neutrals and one or two accent colours you love. This way, everything mixes and matches easily.
- Choose Multi-Use Pieces: Think about how many ways you can wear each item. A simple blouse should work with jeans, skirts, and even layered under a dress.
When I did my Personal Stylist training several years ago, one of my most favourite sessions was when we had to create a capsule style wardrobe with 30 pieces in total. The aim was to be able to create as many outfits as possible, using only the items we had selected. It was a great exercise, every item had to be considered carefully to ensure it could be teamed with the other selected items. From memory, I managed to create over 100 different outfits with the pieces I had chosen.
Wait for Sales and Shop Off-Season
- Follow Your Favourite Brands for Sales Alerts: Sign up for emails from brands you love or follow them on social media. They often announce them there first.
- Plan Ahead for Off-Season Shopping: Buy winter coats in Spring and sandals in Autumn…you can often score some amazing deals!
It can really be worth holding off till end of season to purchase a seasonal item. I noticed the cashmere sweater I had been eyeing off all winter, had been reduced to half the original price by the start of spring …. definitely worthwhile waiting for!
Get Creative with Styling for a Fresh Look
Ways to Reinvent Old Pieces:
- Layering for a New Look: Throw a turtleneck or long sleeve tee under a summer dress to transition it into colder weather or add a belt over a blazer to change the silhouette. Add a longer slip style skirt underneath a dress to add length and detail. Removing the belt that came with a dress or pants, and replacing it with a different one or maybe even use a scarf instead. The possibilities are limitless!
